Ouch


We are still up in the jungle. Still limited internet, but today I am in town, back in civilization for a few days again.
2 weeks ago I wasn't paying attention, and I don't have a lot of experience with motorbikes, and I wasn't wearing jeans, and I got a burn on my right calf from the exhaust of the bike.
Ouch.
I had to spend almost 2 weeks being careful, resting, and staying out of the sun. I did a lot of thinking, reading, and writing. I had a lot of what I call "Aha! moments". The injury is all better now, don't you worry. It was my own little healing miracle. Only 2 weeks later and the wound is just pretty pink new skin.
I faced many fears out in the jungle. I squashed many indoor spiders. I took out my fair share of scorpions. I have to figure out how to go back to 'normal' after this? Could be tricky.

There are crazy things in the jungle. Everything is more intense there. Especially without being able to look things up on the internet, which is like the ability to talk to experts on things.


More early morning light. Every angle from the driveway gives a new perspective.



The jungle changes a man. And the woman. I am both more alert (think scorpions) and more relaxed than I've ever been. Or maybe just tired from working so hard. I am a chronic sleep in kind of gal, and yet here I get up before the sun every day. Sometimes it's me, sometimes it's the howler monkeys, sometimes it's the chachalakas. Those birds are a trip first thing in the A.M. let me tell you.



So much has changed in 2 months. First it felt like we were in the jungle camping out with the spider folks. Now these guys came and used machetes to reveal coffee plants shaded by orange trees. That's much nicer. This is yet another early morning picture, trying to show how the sun hits.


This is me, thinking about going into the jungle 2 months ago.

Tuckered out by 9am??

  I'm dedicating this post to Rhiannon, who says one day she must come here. I got up, sat at the back porch and had some chamba chai, and jumped on my bike. It was just after 6am when we rolled out of the arched gate to the house, which was covered in flowering vines.   Getting up before 6am is wonderful. March is summer time here, and it gets so dang hot in the middle of the day! Everything is quieter and cooler at 6am. I used to whine and moan about getting up early, but I've never had such a great incentive before. Plus, I don't work swing shifts until midnight either. That factors in too.   We got to the beach and the had already come up. Pity, because it's amazing watching the sky light up, then the sun emerge from behind the mountains. It was low tide, which means tomorrow morning will be a good time to snorkel. It's going to be so much fun, I can't wait. The hardest part about snorkeling is reminding Ron that I like shallow water, not going half way...

I held on and laughed

What do I write about? The outstanding things we've been seeing and doing every day? The way it all makes me feel? How much it all cost? The days full of wonder and excitement? Let me tell you about one moment is an epic day. I was talking to my Mom (oh, the wonders of technology and satellites) while at a monumental Buddhist temple here on the island of Java called Borobudur. She said to me: I've ridden an elephant once in my life, if you get a chance, you should do it! I hung up and a few minutes later I saw this elephant in an empty field. I had my picture taken with him, so show how the bottom of the saddle is much taller than the top of my head. In person is so amazing. You hear that elephants are big, and I get it, but the size of it's feet are even bigger than what I imagined. The footprint was so huge! The trunk was so long!
