The foreign life

New rules. I have to learn the rules. It can be confusing sometimes. But I get by. So far. This picture was sitting at the front desk of our hotel. I wondered what they had against prickly balloons. I wasn't going to ask, my imagination was having a good time with this one. Turns out that reality is pretty amusing too. The sign means no dogs and no durian. The front desk clerk one durian fruit can stink up the entire hotel. I looked it up. Here's what the Smithsonian website said: If you’ve smelled a  durian  even once, you probably remember it. Even with the husk intact, the notorious Asian fruit has such a potent stench that it’s  banned on the Singapore Rapid Mass Transit . Food writer Richard Sterling has written “its odor is best described as…turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away.” It looks like this: Do you see those short little boats? They are ferries. They hol...

The island of Borneo

Image
I think I will do a picture journal.  The first flight was four hours. From Liberia in Costa Rica, to Houston in Texas. Where we spent part of the night, getting up super early. Then a 40 minute flight on a jet from Houston to Dallas. Then a 6 hour delay for the big flight. Then a 16 hour flight from Texas to Hong Kong, arriving at night. We spent the night there.  Then a 3-4 hour flight to Singapore. Fantastic airport, by the way. Then a last flight of one and a half hours to Kuching on the island of Borneo. Now we are 14 hours ahead of Costa Rica and Utah. That 16 hour flight was so weird. It's completely unnatural to have all these people sitting completely still for that long. We didn't get much sleep the night before, and for me it was like being in a trance for 16 hours. In and out of sleep, back and forth with varying levels of consciousness.  I missed the first 2 dinners and sunsets, just sleeping. Sigh. It's a good thing we are here for a few m...

Why I can't lose weight

Image
“Why can’t I lose weight?” This is a false question. Everyone can lose weight. It’s very simple. There is only one step. Eat healthy food. So maybe one other step is to donate all of the unhealthy food in your house. See what that leaves you with. The real question is why can’t I make better food choices at the grocery store or restaurant? What blocks us from making those good decisions and reach for the salad? We know better. Why buy the potato chips and cookies and Pepsi? We think we want it. Why do we want it? It will make us happy? At the cost of our health? We get so much pleasure from the taste buds that we are willing to give the rest of the body something toxic to fuel itself? I need some affirmations for this. Like learning a spell at Hogwarts to cast, right? Like an incantation to invoke some change. To channel some energy. Affirmations are really fun when you get into them. I feel fantastic when I make healthy food choices I cherish the value of food for my bod...
