Create luck

I believed. And I have achieved. I am reminded yet again of the sign I used to have on my wall that said: Living the dream. It was just on a piece of wood, in my living room. I also had a map of Costa Rica on my fridge. I also had a dream board that said Costa Rica 2016 in really big letters.
I believe that life can be beautiful. I believe I can find value and love in most everything. I believe in being good to people. Better than good, actually. I believe in being ridiculously good to people. I believe in pronia - the opposite of paranoia. I believe everything is conspiring to make life incredible.
I want to tell you about my day yesterday. I want to share the amazement and awe. I'm just warning you now, it's very cool.
I started the day like almost every day for the last 4 months. (Yes! We hit the 4 month mark of being in Samara, in the jungle.) I had a 1-2 hour breakfast on the back porch with my 2 best friends. My husband and my mother. Then some new friends stopped by, so we could grab our snorkel gear and show them where to see the fish. It was a perfect day, not too hot. The tide was just right, going out, and creating a new scene of rocks appearing where water once was. The water was perfect, and the fish were amazing. I saw this one fish I've never seen before. A yellow puffer fish. It was the size of a... well, kind of like when I put 2 my two fists together. It was easy to follow, being quite yellow around dark coral. I came within 2 feet of it, which was cool. They are so funny looking, and have this top fin that wiggles around like the side fins. Here are some facts I found:
Biologists think pufferfish, also known as blowfish, developed their famous “inflatability” because their slow, somewhat clumsy swimming style makes them vulnerable to predators. In lieu of escape, pufferfish use their highly elastic stomachs and the ability to quickly ingest huge amounts of water (and even air when necessary) to turn themselves into a virtually inedible ball several times their normal size. Some species also have spines on their skin to make them even less palatable. They are scaleless fish and usually have rough to spiky skin. All have four teeth that are fused together into a beak-like form.
I saw other puffer fish too. Some spotted, some plain. It was just amazing. Our friends left, and we stayed to swim some more. It was so Out of This World to be floating, watching, not listening (you hear much less under water) and it was like becoming a sea creature in some ways. It's the most incredible feeling. I get nervous in deeper water though, I'm still a huge fan of only a few feet of water or less under me. But we took the deeper way back to the sandy part of the beach. I felt so nervous the first time we snorkeled, I know the current can carry you away without you noticing. So I would come up, and almost panic if I couldn't find Ron nearby, or I looked out into deeper water. It was just so foreign, you know? Not at all like swimming in a pool. So this time we went to a bit deeper water, but we had the mesh bag for the snorkel gear, and he held one side, and I held the other. It was incredibly romantic to me, because I didn't feel so alone in a vast ocean, and I felt so brave, like I could do anything with Ron by my side.
Then we walked home and de-salted, and went out to eat at his favorite restaurant back near the beach. The food was good! Then we went home and could not stay awake. For me, it was a glorious nap, I was wonderfully tired from an amazing morning of 3 hours of swimming. I need a thesaurus, because I'm over-using the word amazing. But the days here are filled with consistent amazement!
The last breath-taking part of the day was the sunset. I walked to the tiny grocery store with my Mom, and on the way back we just stared at the sky. It was purple. Coolest thing ever for both of us. I was in awe. The silhouette of the tall trees, the faded dark purple color, the partial moon. At certain points there were breaks in the trees, and the view was mountain, some peach fading into the lightest purple, then one single bright star, and directly above it was a glowing moon in a sky becoming a darker purple. I've never seen anything like it. The beautiful surprises never end here. After living here over 20 years, my Mom says she's never seen it like that before either.

I always take too many pictures, this year I'm trying to just Be in the Moment. I found some pictures online that represent what I saw. I had never considered doing a Google search for purple sunsets. Wow, the pictures! Imagine this sunset picture with more jungle trees to hide the lower colors. The yellow fish is pretty close to what I saw.

  1. Such a romantic story, Suzette. You are almost convincing me to work on saving to come down and see you all. However it would take two years or so. Never know. From 2003 to 2005, I would do my husband's books when he was unloading road salt in the Kamloops rail yard. I became rather intimate with the night sky as I worked from 2 am to get the invoices into Saskatchewan by 6 am, taking a break and going outside periodically. If the sky was clear, I would see shooting stars nearly every night, in winter; January usually the Northern Lights and in February the spectacular event of shooting showers. While I like days, I love nights and so many miss them. Take care and thanks.
