Eels and water bills

  How do you pay your water bill? In the 3 years and 2 places I lived in Cedar City Utah, I never had a water bill. I mailed a check in Apple Valley, California – we bought our water from an Indian tribe that had the water rights. When I lived in Las Vegas, Nevada – I paid the bill online. Here in Samara paying the water bill is a small adventure. It’s a short walk down dirt roads. In the rainy season it’s all mud and puddles. In the dry season it’s all dusty and the sun is bearing down on me.   The first time I paid the water bill was the first day I woke up in Costa Rica. I saw my first iguana on the road there. A few months ago I had to walk in between 4 cows that decided to settle down for an afternoon nap on the road. They weren’t asleep, but they didn’t get up. Thank goodness, they were huge. My days are numbered

  Why do we insist on putting a numerical value on everything? There are 60 seconds in a minute. 365.5 days in a year. When I'm traveling my days are numbered. I counted down to Costa Rica last August. I counted down to Denmark in March and April. Now I'm just counting (counting up, maybe?) We arrived back in Samara on Wed the 28th. That is Day 1. So today is Day 5.   Coming back to Samara is like deja vu all over again. Everything about it is so different. Not just the sights of the verdant green tropical landscape and towering trees and lush vegetation. Not just the feel that surrounds me with the warm and humid air that I love. Maybe also heightened by the fact that I can peel off all the layers and lounge in a bathing suit all day. Add to that the warm sand under my feet, and it's a far cry from the boots and long socks I was wearing in Denmark and Poland. Then it's also the way it sounds here. I love to eat the lotus flower fruit. It seems more like a nut to me, but I looked it up and it's a fruit. What a treasure. First you get a beautiful flower, then it morphs into an odd shaped fruit, and you have to dig out the seeds and take off the shell of that. It's supposed to be a kind of superfruit. Different websites claim it can help with everything from acne to fighting fungal infections. They use it for bleeding disorders and it's all kinds of great for skincare. The guy on our tour said it's great for upset stomach and also cures constipation.
