Small world, time flies

Just over a month ago I spoke to my Father for the first time in about 4 years. In just 20 days from now we will arrive in Denmark to go visit him. Life has always been that way. Taking me places that are just incredible. Look at me! I'm in Costa Rica, planning the details of my trip to Denmark. 2 months ago I would not have dreamed that we would have those tickets in hand. After buying the tickets we ran across a couple taking pictures of monkeys on the street outside our front door. The man says he drives through the town my Father lives in, on his way to work every day. They are from Denmark. Weird, right?
By some fateful decision of Destiny my brother and I are the only cousins who didn't grow up in Denmark learning Danish. But I love learning it, and 9 days later I'm at 5%. I'm not sure about the app Duolingo, it is teaching me how to say: Jer er en bjorn. I am a bear. And Fuglene drikker ol. The bird drinks beer. But... it's a starting point, right?? My Danish cousins assure me that everyone speaks good English. That's a relief, but that's not enough. I really truly want to learn Danish. Although it will be nice to have real conversations in English! Jeg er glad. I am happy.

A second world connection was at church yesterday. We go to a small congregation of 50-100 people maybe. 2 guys walked in, and said they were from Canada. So I said hello to them. It's the usual: What part of Canada, eh? Turns out they live about half way between where my Grandmother and I lived in the city (so I could go to a French Immersion program), and where my Mother and I (and the family) built her house in the country. Weird, right? Then one of the guys says he also used to live in Las Vegas. I told him East Las Vegas. He says: give me street names. I said Sahara and Nellis. He says: that's where the gym is, that I went to. Just odd. I hope to have more of these fantastic connections with people as we travel.
We don't do that pesky "daylight savings" time change here in Costa Rica. I heard a quote from "an old indian" that says: Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom, and have a longer blanket. Hahaha. So true. I've never understood it myself. But time has truly altered since last month. It travels so much faster now! The days whip on by with a madness. It feels like time travel. Like the sun no longer takes 365 days to go around the sun, it only takes 200. I blink, and another day has gone by. This upcoming trip has also put additional value in every day. We are coming back. But I still feel "my tropical days are numbered".
There is also a wonderful extra dimension to Life when you have something extraordinary to look forward to. I highly recommend it!

  1. I love time travel but it brings up many disturbing issues. I love that you are 5% fluent in Danish. Have a great time in Denmark.
