A taste of Somali
Today was a strange mini adventure. Ron saw a restaurant that served Somali food and we thought it would be cool to check it out. African food sounded interesting.
We walked in and it was noisy with people talking and seemed busy enough. We sat down and then I looked around. I was the only female in the restaurant. For a minute there were 2 women at the counter ordering to go (I guess) and they had head coverings on. I heard a strange language being spoken all around me it sounded pretty cool.
I started to wonder if I was a heathen to them. Then some women came in to eat as part of a group and they put up a partition around them, seating them in a corner. The internet says that most Somalis are Sunni Muslim. But trying to understand that will take a lot more reading. I wish I could just sit down and talk with one of these ladies. What's it like to be them? I read that they think the women should avert their eyes. Should I feel bad for looking at the waiter as I spoke to him? I felt a bit like a fish out of water after I saw the foreign platter set in front of Ron.
The food was fantastic, but I think I will have Ron go in and get To Go food next time. I had this totally tasty wrap thing called chicken shwarma, I think. Ron ordered some goat meat thing, and it came on a really big platter. There is this grayish brownish thing that was on the platter and folded on a side dish kind of like a tortilla. It didn't look like a very yummy color. And the texture was so weird. Like a thin mushroom fleshy kind of feeling. It made my taste buds happy, but it was very odd.
The food was spicy and wonderful. It wasn't the kind of hot that made my mouth burn, but my tongue was tingling almost to the point of being numb.
I think it also makes the point that if you want to travel a lot but don't have the vacation time, then go to the restaurants. Make friends with international people from other cultures. This restaurant was an amazing experience. If you have a dream to go to France, get your passport! Until you buy the tickets take French lessons on an app. Find a local French club. Listen to music in French. Watch shows that highlight France. Eat French dishes. No, french fries don't count. Live the dream one escargot at a time.
