They are called Brahman cows
I love these Brahman cows around here! If you don't want to see a ton of pictures of cows, you might as well turn back now. I am compelled to post the pictures I took today. From my back yard. Because despite the Double Dog (Cow?) Dare, I didn't get too close to them when I was on the street. It's one of those typical days. You come home from the store and you see something down the street, and you think, oh look, more horses. I mean, they wander everywhere. I pretty painted pinto was on the beach this morning, but I was too busy looking in tide pools to take a picture.
But these cows, I looked down the road, and it wasn't horses after all. It was a Momma and 2 babies. I went back outside 10 minutes later, and they were next to the house. About 20 of them. When I look on-line I only find that the breed started in India. But what are they really LIKE? That's my question. They are pretty docile here. But this little herd had at least 2 bulls, and one of them was huge. The top of his back was about 5 feet, not including his neck and gigantic head.
Sometimes I am looking out the window on the bus and I see a herd, and I think of marshmallows. Some of them are white, and some of them are grey like you dropped one in the ash, some look exactly like the color of toasted marshmallows. The ones I saw today were a mix of colors. I don't know, maybe it's the hump that gets to me. They say they aren't cross bred with camels, but I have a hard time believing it. Then they have the wave of material, under their chin. I guess you would call it skin. Plus big dark eyes like anime cartoons. They constantly amaze me. It never gets old.
I've had to walk past 2 of them laying on the ground, to get to pay a bill on a small road. This morning my Mom says she saw the bull, it was by itself, on the road. While she was walking down the road. She just moseyed over to the other side, they eyed each other, and she kept walking. Pura vida, baby.
One of the cows went in to the neighbor's yard and I was on one side of our fence, and this bull was on the other (ALL parts of these animals are monstrous, can I just say? I tried not to stare. He was like, "My eyes are up here, lady!"). He was busy eating grass, just 2 feet away from me. He didn't actually talk to me, or else I would have made him mind his manners and not talk with a mouth full of food. I wondered where he came from, and where he would end up by the end of the night. I wondered if cows gave themselves names. How does a cow self-identify? He probably doesn't. His whole world probably revolves around one of 2 questions. The first one being: how do I get to more grass? Ok, one of 3 questions. Because he probably has a sense of self preservation, so he's probably trying to figure out any potential threats to his welfare. The 3rd question involves the Ladies. I mean, the cows.
Below is a sample of the many photos I took today, when I forget anything else I may have been doing, and just enjoyed some bovine goodness. Maybe one of my Spirit Animals is the cow?
